Ebook design

Every screen, every text size.

Our ebook design gives your book a cover that sells and an inside that reads well, whatever device, font or text size your reader picks.

Formats

EPUB or PDF: which does your book need?

It depends on how the book is read and where it is sold. EPUB is the open standard published by the W3C, and the main ebook stores accept it.

FormatBest forHow it behaves
Reflowable EPUBNovels, memoirs, guides and most text-led booksText reflows to fit the screen, and readers choose the font and size
Fixed-layout EPUBPicture books, cookbooks and comicsEach page keeps its design, like a printed spread
Interactive PDFReports, guides and downloads from your websiteFixed pages with working links and bookmarks; best on larger screens

Covers

Why does an ebook cover need different thinking?

Most buyers meet your cover as a small thumbnail beside a dozen others. The title has to read at that size, so we use fewer words, bigger type and one strong image. Kindle’s ideal cover is 2,560 pixels tall by 1,600 wide, and we supply that alongside the sizes other stores ask for.

If there is a print edition, the front cover carries over and we add the spine and back to fit the printer’s cover template.

How it works

How we turn a manuscript into an ebook

  1. Clean manuscript

You send the final edited text, usually as a Word file. We tidy its styles so headings, quotations and lists are tagged properly.

  2. Design and build

We design the cover and set the interior, with a linked contents page, embedded fonts where the licence allows and alt text for images.

  3. Test and deliver

We validate the EPUB, check it on phones, tablets and e-readers, then hand over files ready to upload to each store.

Questions

Questions about ebook design

Question not here? Send it to us and we will answer it directly.

Ask a question

Do I need an ISBN for an ebook?

Not always. Amazon’s Kindle store gives each ebook its own identifier, and several other stores don’t insist on an ISBN either. If you do use them, each format needs its own, so the ebook, paperback and hardback each get a separate number from the ISBN agency in your country. We place it on the copyright page.

Can you turn my printed book into an ebook?

Yes. We work from the final print PDF or, better, the original text file, and rebuild the layout as a reflowable EPUB. Page numbers, running heads and hyphenation from the print edition come out, because screens handle those differently, and the index is either linked to the text or dropped.

Why do some ebooks cost more to design?

Complexity matters more than length. A text-only novel is straightforward to build, while tables, footnotes, captioned images, equations and fixed-layout pages all take longer. The cover is priced separately from the interior, and a paperback cover wrap is an optional extra on the same quote.

Are your ebooks accessible?

We build them to be. That means a logical reading order, real headings, alt text on images, a linked contents list and live text rather than pictures of text. Accessibility matters commercially too: the European Accessibility Act has applied to ebooks sold in the EU since June 2025.

Writing a free guide for your website?

If the ebook is a free download to win email sign-ups, PDF is usually the better format. We design it in your brand, add working links back to your site and keep the file small enough to download quickly on mobile data.

Start your ebook design

Tell us the title, the rough word count, whether there are images or tables and where you plan to sell the book. Send the manuscript if it’s ready. The cover and the interior are priced separately in one fixed quote. Your ebook design then begins with a sample chapter for you to check.
